Quick answer

As of April 2026, almost all gambling is illegal in Thailand under the Gambling Act of 1935, with narrow exceptions for the state lottery and licensed horse racing. In January 2025 the Technology Crime Suppression Division classified Polymarket as illegal online gambling, and Polymarket moved to a close only status for Thai users, who can exit positions but not open new ones. The Ministry of Finance acknowledged interest in a future regulated pilot in March 2026, but real money prediction markets remain prohibited for now, so confirm your own position before acting.

How the rules fit together

A strict old law, and a possible opening.

01
The 1935 Gambling Act
Thailand operates one of the strictest gambling regimes in the region. Under the Gambling Act of 1935, almost all forms of gambling are illegal, with narrow exceptions for the state lottery and licensed horse racing. A real money prediction market does not fit those exceptions.
02
Enforcement against Polymarket
In January 2025 the Technology Crime Suppression Division classified Polymarket as illegal online gambling, stating that using cryptocurrency to trade and bet violated Thai law. Polymarket subsequently moved to a close only status for Thai users.
03
A possible future framework
On 31 March 2026 the Ministry of Finance acknowledged growing interest in prediction markets, noting they could improve financial inclusion if paired with strong consumer protection, and reportedly considered a pilot within a regulated framework. Nothing in that statement makes the current real money market lawful.
What the law actually says

Close only is the practical signal here.

Thailand has treated prediction markets through the lens of its long standing gambling prohibition rather than as a financial innovation. The Gambling Act of 1935 makes almost all betting illegal, and in early 2025 the Technology Crime Suppression Division applied that view to Polymarket, classifying it as illegal online gambling and flagging the use of cryptocurrency to place positions.

The clearest practical signal for residents is the close only status that followed. In a close only mode, existing users may exit positions but cannot open new ones. That is the behaviour of a platform withdrawing from a market it views as restricted, and it tells you that opening fresh real money positions is not the intended path for Thai users.

A March 2026 Ministry of Finance statement raised the possibility of a regulated pilot, which is worth watching, but it does not change the current position. Treat the status here as a dated snapshot and confirm with Thai authorities before relying on it.

What a Thailand reader can use

Manifold MarketsPlay money

Runs on play money rather than cash, so it sits outside gambling rules and is reachable worldwide. Useful for learning the mechanics without financial risk.

MetaculusNo stakes

A forecasting community with no money at stake, scored on accuracy rather than payouts. Available worldwide as a research and reputation tool.

Restricted or contested

The compliant note

PolymarketClose only

Classified as illegal online gambling by the Technology Crime Suppression Division in January 2025 and moved to a close only status for Thai users. We do not link to an account.

KalshiNot available

A United States exchange regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. It is not open to residents of this country, and we do not link to an account here.

FutuurRestricted

A crypto funded venue whose real money product is limited by jurisdiction. Treat access as restricted and unconfirmed for residents here unless the platform states otherwise.

Availability is indicative and as of April 2026. We link to a platform only where it is genuinely available to a Thailand reader, and we mark contested positions as contested. Reachability is not the same as legality.

A reminder

A contract price is an implied probability, not a prediction. In an exchange model there is no house, only other participants, and the price moves as they trade.

Whether a market is legal where you live tells you nothing about whether it is a wise place to put money. Read our guide to how the prices work before you treat any number as a forecast.

A note on risk,

Legal does not mean low risk. Prediction markets can lose you money. Stake only what you can afford to lose, never to chase a loss, and never on borrowed money. If it stops feeling like a free choice, step back and seek support, such as a national problem gambling helpline in your country.

Common questions

Thailand legality, answered plainly.

Are prediction markets legal in Thailand?

As of April 2026, almost all gambling is illegal under the Gambling Act of 1935, and authorities classified Polymarket as illegal online gambling in January 2025. Real money prediction markets remain prohibited for now, despite interest in a future pilot. This is general information, not legal advice.

Who regulates this area in Thailand?

Gambling falls under the Gambling Act of 1935, with enforcement by units such as the Technology Crime Suppression Division. Financial and crypto matters involve the Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand, and the Ministry of Finance has signalled interest in a possible regulated framework.

What does close only status mean for Polymarket users in Thailand?

Close only means existing users may exit positions but cannot open new ones. It reflects the platform withdrawing from a market it treats as restricted, and it signals that opening fresh real money positions is not the intended path for Thai users.

Will prediction markets become legal in Thailand?

It is uncertain. The Ministry of Finance acknowledged interest in March 2026 and reportedly considered a pilot within a regulated framework, but nothing in that statement makes the current real money market lawful. Watch for a formal framework rather than assuming change.

Are play money or forecasting tools allowed?

Tools with no money at stake, such as play money platforms or forecasting communities scored on accuracy, sit outside the gambling prohibition and are generally reachable. They offer no financial payout and are best treated as learning tools.
