Massachusetts runs a regulated online sports betting market under the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, yet Sporttrade never held a licence there, and it has now left United States online sports betting entirely. This page explains why it is unavailable to a Massachusetts resident and what the federal alternatives are. Information, not advice. As of May 2026.

Massachusetts is not a restrictive state. It legalised retail and online sports betting and licenses operators through the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, with several mobile sportsbooks live. Despite that open market, Sporttrade never sought or held a Massachusetts licence, having operated in only five states. Sporttrade is not a federally listed prediction market today. It built its business as a state licensed betting exchange and only ever held gaming licences in five states, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Jersey and Virginia. In 2026 it announced it would leave online sports betting entirely, and all consumer access to its betting markets ended on June 26, 2026. In February 2026 it applied to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to be designated as a contract market and clearing organisation, but as of late June 2026 that decision was still pending, so the company has no live consumer product to offer a resident of any state.
As of May 2026, Sporttrade is not available to a Massachusetts resident. Even though Massachusetts has a regulated online sports betting market, Sporttrade never held a licence there, and it closed its United States online betting markets on June 26, 2026 while its application to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission remained pending. Confirm the current position before assuming any launch.
These are federally regulated event contract venues, not a like for like replacement for an exchange sportsbook. Availability is indicative, individual products including sports contracts can be restricted, and scores are illustrative editorial examples. Confirm the current position before acting.
Massachusetts shows that availability is not only about whether a state allows betting. The state legalised sports wagering and licenses operators through the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, and several mobile books are live. Sporttrade simply was not one of them. It only ever held gaming licences in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Jersey and Virginia, so a Massachusetts resident could not use it even at the platform peak.
That gap is now moot, because Sporttrade has left online sports betting across the United States. All consumer access ended on June 26, 2026, and the company filed in February 2026 to be designated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a contract market and clearing organisation. As of late June 2026 that application was still pending, so there is no live Sporttrade product in Massachusetts or anywhere else.
If Sporttrade later wins federal designation, that status would not require a Massachusetts licence, and a future prediction market could reach Massachusetts residents the way other designated contract markets do. For now, the genuinely reachable category is the federally registered event contract exchanges, whose non sports markets are generally available nationwide while sports event contracts remain contested. The contracts carry a real risk of loss.
As of May 2026, Sporttrade is not available to a Massachusetts resident. Although Massachusetts has a regulated online sports betting market, Sporttrade never held a Massachusetts Gaming Commission licence, and it closed its United States online betting markets on June 26, 2026. Its federal application was still pending. This is general information, not legal advice.
Massachusetts licenses sports betting operators individually through the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Sporttrade only ever held licences in five other states and never obtained a Massachusetts licence, so it was never available to residents there even before its United States exit.
If the Commodity Futures Trading Commission grants Sporttrade designation as a contract market, that federal status would not depend on a Massachusetts licence. The decision was still pending as of late June 2026, so treat any Massachusetts launch as unconfirmed for now.
Massachusetts residents can also look at federally registered event contract exchanges, whose non sports markets are generally available nationwide. Sports event contracts there are contested in the courts. Confirm current eligibility and markets directly with each platform before acting.
Available does not mean low risk, and not available does not make the wider category safe. Event contracts can lose you money. Stake only what you can afford to lose, never to chase a loss, and never on borrowed money. If it stops feeling like a free choice, step back. In the United States you can call or text the helpline on 1-800-GAMBLER or visit ncpgambling.org.
The position above rests on the federal framework and on each platform standing with its regulator. Confirm it yourself before you act, because the rules in this area change.
