Quick answer

No California licence, no access here.

As of December 2025, a California resident cannot use Sporttrade. Sporttrade runs on state gaming licences and holds them in only five states, namely Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Jersey and Virginia, per its own availability page updated 6 May 2026. California has no legal online sportsbook framework for it to enter, so there is no licensed route for Sporttrade to serve the state.

The nuance worth knowing

Sporttrade has applied to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for designation as a federal contract market and clearinghouse, and the agency publicly posted its application materials in early 2026, per Sportico. If that approval is granted, Sporttrade could in principle reach residents nationwide the way Kalshi and Crypto.com already do. Approval is not assured and could take many months or longer, so it does not change the California position today.

What this means in California

Why California closes the licensed door.

Sporttrade, founded in 2018, was an early exchange style venue for sports. Its founders bet that state gaming commissions, not the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission, would be its regulator, so it pursued state licences and obtained them in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Jersey and Virginia. That is the full footprint as of December 2025, per Sporttrade's own availability page updated 6 May 2026.

California is not on that list, and it cannot easily be. California has no legal online sports betting. Voters decisively rejected Propositions 26 and 27 in November 2022, which would have authorised retail and online wagering. Without a state framework to license into, Sporttrade has no licensed path to offer its exchange to California residents under the model it has used so far.

The federal route is the open question. Sporttrade is one of several applicants seeking CFTC approval to run a national prediction market, and the agency posted its materials in early 2026 per Sportico. Competitors that already hold federal designation reach all 50 states, including California, because federal registration does not require a state by state licence. Sporttrade does not yet hold that designation, so it remains limited to its five licensed states.

You may be able to create a Sporttrade account and browse markets from anywhere, since the platform allows signup and deposits before location checks, but you must be physically inside an eligible state to place a trade, and the eligibility requires being 21 or older. A California resident therefore cannot trade as of December 2025. The list below sets out federally regulated venues that do serve California residents today, subject to age and identity checks.

FAQ

Sporttrade in California, in short.

Is Sporttrade legal and available in California?

As of December 2025, no. Sporttrade operates on state gaming licences and holds them in only five states, namely Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, New Jersey and Virginia. California has no legal online sports betting framework, so there is no licensed route for Sporttrade to serve residents there. This is general information, not legal advice.

Could Sporttrade come to California later?

Possibly, but not soon and not certainly. Sporttrade has applied to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for federal designation, which would let it operate nationwide without state licences. The agency posted its application in early 2026, and a decision could take many months or longer. Until then, California stays out of reach.

Why is there no sports betting framework in California?

California voters rejected Propositions 26 and 27 in November 2022, which would have legalised retail and online sports wagering. No replacement framework has since taken effect, so the state has no licensed online sportsbook market for a venue like Sporttrade to enter.

Can I open a Sporttrade account from California?

You can generally create an account and deposit from anywhere, because Sporttrade allows signup before location checks, but you cannot place a trade unless you are physically inside one of its five eligible states and are 21 or older. A California resident cannot trade as of December 2025.

What can a Californian use instead?

Several federally regulated prediction markets serve California residents, subject to age and identity checks. We list a number below and cover the state in detail on our California legality page. Always confirm current eligibility directly with a platform before opening an account.

A note on risk,

Available or not, prediction markets can lose you money. Stake only what you can afford to lose, never to chase a loss, and never on borrowed money. If it stops feeling like a free choice, step back.
